FAINTING GOAT INFORMATION
What is Myotonia? Myotonia is the condition that causes fainting goats to stiffen or fall over when startled. This condition is a combination of recessive genes. The goat will stiffen or stiffen and fall lasting 10 to 20 seconds, at which time they are fully awake and aware of what is going on around them. The fainting does not hurt them or cause any damage to their ability to reproduce or have a long lifespan.
Is Myotonia, Stiff Legged, Fainting, Tennessee Meat Goat the same breed of goat?
YES, each Fainting goat breeder has his or her on personal name they prefer to call their goats. We at Deer Springs call ours Fainting Goats.
Where did they originate? It is said the Fainting goat can be traced back to early 1800's in Marshall County, Tennessee, where a farmer, John Tinsley, appeared with a buck and 3 does that fainted. He sold them to Dr. H.H. Mayberry. Dr. Mayberry bred them and persevered this very unique breed of goat.
